After more than seven decades of serving the Peoria Metro Area and faced with an aging existing structure that carries more than 20,000 eastbound trips a day, the Illinois Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, conducted a comprehensive study that included extensive public comment opportunities, in determining the need to replace the McClugage Bridge. With the design phase of the replacement bridge completed, construction on the new structure began in Spring 2019.
This new structure will improve capacity, increase safety, reduce travel times and ensue additional multimodal access with bike/ped accommodations. With an expected completion date of 2023, the new McClugage Bridge will improve the traveling experience for everyone who uses the bridge.
The project is funded through the $33.2 billion Rebuild Illinois, which is the largest capital program in state history, touching all modes of Illinois transportation: roads and bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
As part of the new FY2021-26 Proposed Highway Improvement Program released in July, IDOT is investing $21.3 billion to improve roads and bridges over the next six years, the second multi-year plan that reflects the impact of Rebuild Illinois.
